Christingle Service

Annual Christingle Service with the Duchy School. Christingles are symbolic objects, usually oranges, which represent the world. They have sweets stuck in them symbolising all of God’s creation, a red ribbon around them representing the blood of Jesus who died to save us and in the top is a candle. The candles are lit during the service symbolising Jesus bringing light and hope to people living in darkness. Christingles were first used in the Moravian Church in Germany in the 18^th century; the name comes the German ‘Christkindl’ meaning Little Christ Child.  And in the past when oranges were difficult to get, swedes were used instead.
